A prescription discount card is a free card that lowers the cash price you pay for medications at the pharmacy. It is not insurance — it uses pre-negotiated rates so you pay a discounted cash price, often 20–80% below the standard retail price. You show the card or a coupon at the counter and the pharmacist applies the discount. There is usually no sign-up and no fee.
How does a discount card work?
Each card carries an RxBIN, RxPCN and RxGroup number. The pharmacist enters these to apply the program's negotiated price instead of the standard retail price. You can't combine a discount card with insurance on the same purchase, but you can use whichever price is lower.
